google mashup games, first post

I still have to do more research on this one, but these are two projects I came accross + they have some interest in terms of how they directly use google map tools to create some playfull experience.

01_BATTLESHIP GOOGLE

With Google Earth open enough to place objects dynamically using the tag, a bit of SketchUp modelling, here is a mashup version of battleship. Here is how it works: One person places their ships using Google Earth and the other person goes out in the normal world with a mobile phone, a GPS connected to the mobile phone. The phone has a small Python script on it that reads the GPS and sends the data to the game engine, which then updates the Google Earth KML model showing the current state of the game grid. When the player who’s trying to sink the ships wants to try for a hit, they call into the game engine and say “drop”. The game reads back the coordinates at which the “peg” was dropped and shortly thereafter, the other player will see the peg appear at the coordinate it was dropped. If the peg hits one of the ships, it’s a Hit, otherwise it’s a miss.

02_TRIPODS

I like the use of the google- interface here, otherwise hmm…its kind of another Manhattan invading thing i guess…

so ! Your job is to battle against Google Maps tripod markers that are invading Manhattan, When you enter the game, you’ll see a map. On it will be:tripods-01.jpgYou, tripods_02.jpgOther online players and tripods-03.jpgtripods. Gang up with the other players to defeat tripods – there’s a chat box to help you. You can move by using the google navigator.
